Program Components

St. Mary of Providence offers a diverse selection of program options for our clients.  These services are listed below and are provided by the Sisters of St. Mary of Providence.  Because individual needs and function levels vary, each client is always treated individually.

St. Mary of Providence

Aquatics

Our Aquatics Department includes a temperature-controlled swimming pool to assist our clients in therapeutic water activities.  The pool provides daily exercise and therapeutic recreation, as well as training for the Special Olympics.  The Therapeutic Aquatic Program provides care and treatment activities which make a measurable difference in our clients’ lives; exercise enhances their self-esteem and fosters critical life skills for more effective transition and community involvement.

Social Services and Qualified Mental Retardation Professionals (QMRP)

Our Social Services Department and the QRMPs work closely with both residents and their families.  Social workers meet with the residents individually or in groups as needed, to assist in problem solving and coping skills.  The Social Service Department also screens and locates visitors who will write and call residents, visit them and take them out for short trips into the surrounding community.

Dietary Services

Many of our clients require special diets due to health complications and/or physical disabilities.  To ensure good health and proper nutrition, our dietary consultant meets with our medical director and dietary manager regularly to develop individualized therapeutic diet plans as needed.

Music Therapy

Music and musical interventions restore, maintain, and improve the physical, emotional, and psychological well being of our clients.  Musical therapy provides relief for pain, anxiety and stress, and encourages positive changes in mood and emotional states.  It also improves motor skills, social/interpersonal development, cognitive development, self-awareness and spiritual enhancement.

St. Mary of Providence

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy maximizes a client’s skills and abilities for an improved quality of life. Each resident is evaluated by an Occupational Therapist to determine what, if any, treatment is needed.  The program is designed to develop fine motor and sensory motor skills.  Services include customized intervention programs to improve performance in daily life activities, use of adaptive equipment, and guidance to family members and caregivers.

Physical Therapy

All residents are evaluated, as needed, by our Physical Therapy consultant to determine the residents’ ability to participate in our gross motor skills activities.  The evaluation includes physical status, motor skills, and ambulation.  The Physical Therapy department also obtains walkers, canes, and wheelchairs for clients and trains clients and staff in their use.

Medical Services/Nursing

Monitoring our clients’ health issues is the primary focus for the Medical Services/Nursing Department.  They ensure that each client receives adequate health care monitoring and services, including appropriate and timely follow-up based on the need for service.

Nursing personnel is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week and includes both registered and licensed practical nurses.  Staff nurses work under the direction of the Director of Nursing who is supervised by a Nurse Consultant.  Our medical director visits the St. Mary of Providence facility once a week and is on-call 24 hours a day for any medical emergency.  Medical services include dental, podiatry, ophthalmology and other servics as needed.

Recreation/Activities

Recreational therapy contributes to the well being of our residents by improving and maintaining physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning, enhancing independent living skills and overall quality of life.  All residents participate in weekly recreational therapy.  Programs are tailored to the ability, interests, and needs of each individual.  As part of this program, residents are taken into the community for a variety of outings.

Psychiatric Services

Psychiatric Consultation Services are offered on a monthly basis.  As needed, residents are administered mental health evaluations and a variety of therapies are prescribed and monitored by licensed psychiatric professionals.  Our Nursing Department works closely with the consultant psychiatrist to ensure mental health and well-being of our residents and day students.

Pet Therapy

St. Mary of Providence

St. Mary of Providence began an Animal Assisted Therapy program last year, made possible through the wonderful volunteers from Rainbow AAT Incorporated and Paws 4 Patients. Both Rainbow and Paws 4 Patients are prominent and leading animal assisted therapy programs in the Chicago area. All of the pet therapy dogs are certified for therapy and trained to do many different tricks.

Five volunteers and their dogs from Rainbow visit usually the last Saturday of the month, and 3 volunteers from Paws visit on a Sunday and/or one day during the week. The residents have the opportunity to have direct contact with the animals. This therapeutic contact enhances the residents’ lives./p>
